বছরজুড়েই ভারত ও মিয়ানমার থেকে কমবেশি পেঁয়াজ আমদানি হয়। তবে এ বছর দেশে প্রায় ৩৫ লাখ টন পেঁয়াজ উৎপাদন হয়েছে। ফলে কৃষক যাতে মৌসুমে পেঁয়াজের ন্যায্য দর পান, সেটি নিশ্চিত করতে কৃষি মন্ত্রণালয় গত ১৬ মার্চ থেকে আমদানি বন্ধ রাখে। এর পর থেকে পেঁয়াজ বাজারের নিয়ন্ত্রণ চলে যায় মধ্যস্বত্বভোগীদের কবজায়। জোগানে টান না থাকলেও ধীরে ধীরে বাড়তে থাকে দাম। এমন পরিস্থিতিতে পেঁয়াজ আমদানির অনুমতি দেওয়া হবে– বাণিজ্য ও কৃষি মন্ত্রণালয় থেকে বারবার হুঁশিয়ারি দিলেও তা কাজে আসেনি। মাস দেড়েক আগে ৩৫ থেকে ৪৫ টাকা দরে বিক্রি হওয়া পেঁয়াজের কেজি ঠেকে ৮০ টাকায়। এ দামের আশপাশেই ছিল বেশ কিছুদিন।
দুই-তিন দিন আগে হঠাৎ পেঁয়াজের কেজি শতক ছুঁয়েছিল। এরপর গত রোববার বিকেলে কৃষি মন্ত্রণালয় থেকে আমদানির অনুমতি দেওয়া হয়। গণমাধ্যমে এ সংবাদ আসার পরই পড়তে থাকে পেঁয়াজের বাজার। ওই রাতেই রাজধানীর কারওয়ান বাজারে গিয়ে দেখা গেছে, পাইকারি পর্যায়ে কেজিতে কমে গেছে ৫ টাকা ।
গতকাল সোমবার কারওয়ান বাজার ও শ্যামবাজারে খোঁজ নিয়ে জানা গেছে, পাইকারিতে ৬০ থেকে ৬৫ টাকায় পেঁয়াজ বিক্রি হচ্ছে। চট্টগ্রামের খাতুনগঞ্জে আরও কমে বিক্রি হচ্ছে ৫৫ টাকা দরে। তবে পাইকারি বাজারের চেয়ে খুচরায় দাম কমছে তুলনামূলক কিছুটা কম। এ ছাড়া খুচরা পর্যায়ে ৮০ থেকে ৮৫ টাকা বিক্রি হতে দেখা গেছে।
কারওয়ান বাজারের পেঁয়াজ ব্যবসায়ী সুমন মিয়া বলেন, ভারতে এখন পেঁয়াজের দাম অনেক কম। ভারত থেকে এলে দেশি পেঁয়াজের দাম কমে যাবে। এ কারণে যার কাছে যা আছে, সবাই ছেড়ে দিচ্ছে। এর মধ্যে কেউ লাভ করছে আবার কারও লোকসানও হচ্ছে। খুচরা পর্যায়ে দুই-এক দিনের মধ্যে আরও কমে যাবে।
